A few questions

I am also a noob and I've never had an Android phone before. I am very computer literate so if someone asked what are the best apps for use in Windows, I'd tell them that I replace Win Explorer with Speed Commander, best anti-virus is Bit defender, etc.... My question is do you have a list of must have apps to make my droid more productive then the stock apps that came loaded. I've already noticed that ADW-ex is a great replacement for the stock launcher.

I know this is an open ended type of question, but I've been reading a great deal of your posts and you seem very knowledgeable and just thought I'd ask what you use personally. The other question I have is not how to root, but why? I am thinking that rooting is similar to flashing the BIOS on a motherboard, it removes bugs and increases function. Is that why you root? If it is what rom or rom's do you think are the best??

As I'm writing this I am getting a feel for how dumb people who ask me about customizing and upgrading there computers must feel. I really feel dumb, but I'll never know if I don't ask.

Thanks

I use the following:

GO SMS Pro for texting.
Launcher Pro Plus for a launcher replacement...but ADW EX is a good one too. So is Go Launcher.
Tapatalk for the forums (might not be important to you but it is for me).
Fancy Widgets and Beautiful Widgets (mostly Fancy, though, I could skip Beautiful now)
I use Dolphin Browser HD for a web browser. There are other good ones, but that works best for me.

The Amazon App Store is also a must have. One free paid app per day. Even if it's not good it's worth it to get it just in case you ever need it.

If you root the list grows. Rom Manager (still broke for this phone as of right now). Titanium Backup. PimpMyCPU (like SetCPU but for Tegra 2 phones). Root Explorer (file manager, indispensable).

Why root? To have full control over your hardware. You can change ROM's when you want, and each ROM will have a slightly different feature set. You can also flash kernels, which will also have slightly different feature sets. Some are focused on battery life, while others focus on performance.

The best thing I could tell you to do is to read, then read some more, and then read again. Learn all you can about rooting to make sure it's for you.
