Information from 'menu' -> settings -> usage: Google Play uses 200 more times MB's than any other app on my phone. From 'manage apps' -> all apps: Google Play Services is an app that constantly re-installs intself no matter how many times I delete it, and has the most intrusive permissions (that I didn't give consent to) than any other app on my phone. In ICS, you can no longer turn off background data but only set data limits. If I were to download a different app market, disable Google Play, and delete Google Play Services (again).. would that increase battery life and save an enormous amount of data? Or would the phone not be able to function?

You can't download another market app to replace Play. You can use Amazon but that would just add another. You also cannot "delete" Google Play or the service as they are burned in the phone ROM. You can turn off notifications for app updates, and you can turn off mobile data. That being said, I didn't notice much Play activity unless you're in the market or you have auto updates set (bad idea).

That is a bad idea.. I have auto updates off. Also I turned off auto-sync yet I still receive e-mails.
