A little upgrade loophole.

I noticed something that is somewhat of an upgrade loophole. I found this out after Verizon told me that I could get an early upgrade (my upgrade isn't till October) on my second line which has an iPhone as long as its a 4G device... So what did I do, I activated my backup iPhone to my 1st line (I have a galaxy nexus) and the second line already has the iPhone. So I called customer service and told them to put notes on my account that I can upgrade to a 4G device so I won't have any problems at the store.

Went to the store, bought 2 droid razr max for $199 each. I put them on ebay and they sell for over $500. That is an easy way to not lose your last upgrade before the change and make some money for yourself or to buy another phone at full retail like the S3. I now have my Nexus activated again. Oh and by the way I asked them at the store not to activate the Maxx that I will do it myself at home so they wouldn't take out the stickers or anything.

Way to go, you're no better than the crooks that your sticking it to. :-\

Albeit this does show the stellar customer service for which we are paying the "upgrade" fee.

.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why is the OP doing anything wrong? He is using his upgrades, which he's rightly entitled to. He's paying the full upgrade price. He's just choosing to sell the phones and make a little money. If he's choosing to just keep the phones he already has activated on his account instead of the new ones, that's his decision. Obviously we pay dearly for being on Vz, in doing so we are entitled to discounted phones when we sign new contracts, which I'm assuming the OP did when he stated that he's up for an early upgrade. He's still having to sign another 2 year contract so legally and ethically I don't think he's doing anything wrong. Just my humble opinion :p

Uh.. he's still under contract- for much longer now.

Crook? Did I walk in the store and steal something? No I used my hard earned money, $400 of it and PAID for two phones. Why would I let my early upgrade go to waste?

Who is the real crook? Me or Verizon? After the 28th I have yo buy full retail because these real crooks can do whatever they want.

BTW I just extended my contract 2 more years. So who really one here? Me or Verizon?

Very fair. And now with the money I made I will buy a G3 at full retail and keep my Gnex without killing my pockets and Verizon is still getting $160 a month from me. I also stay happy with my unlimited plan.

I see nothing wrong with this. The OP just sold his upgrades to someone else.

I myself am not sure I would trade my upgrades and being stuck for 2 more years on the same phones for a few hundred dollars.

To each their own.

I understand but who is left to go to? No one has unlimited besides sprint and they are terrible. If they do take away my unlimited I can just sell my current phones and pay the fee.

As a consumer of mobile data, and the way things are going, I have examined how I use my mobile devices. When I am switched to the new tiered data plans I may have to make adjustments on how I use my phones and tablet. Everyone will have to do this.

Instead of streaming google music, I will make my music library available off line.
Instead of waisting time a work watching YouTube videos all day, I may choose to actually do my job instead. (joking)
I will connect to WiFi when I can.

When I've done these things in the past I've had no problem using under 2 gig per month. I have been as high as 8 gig, but that was with lots of streaming.

Eventually everyone will have to bend to their carrier. Even the OP. In 2 years when he is ready for new a new phone it will happen. Its the way things are going.

Verizon has made it pretty clear that unlimited data will STAY on your plan as long as you don't purchase a subsidized phone. This means you're grandfathered in if you pay full fare for the phone. This gives those with the addiction to a lot of data to continue that addiction, for a fee.

In past, I always upgrade my wife and parents phone (both part of my family account) and sell those UNOPENED phones on craigslist.
Parents/wife keep using their old dumbphone.
For this, phone needs to be bought from verizon (online/store) or bestbuy.
How is OP's trick different then this?

Its not even a trick....
how many people on here actually keep there subsidized phone for two years?
whether you you use it for a year and sell it to get a different phone, use it for a month, or dont use it at all, it doesnt matter.... you arent doing anything wrong.... you extended your contract for 2yrs and got a discounted phone that you can do anything you want with...

My issue comes with the fact that the 1st line i still under contract for another year and a half. Did activating the old IPhone on the 1st account change that?

If the first account was not on a contract I apologize for my comment, if it is then you did not find a loophole, you found an incompetent customer service rep.

This same thing happened to me actually. I got the nexus day one and was living in a 3g only area and activated my old droid 3 because the nexus signal and battery were killing me. After about 2 days of the droid 3 back on my account I called about an issue on the bill and was told I was eligible for an early upgrade to any 4g device. I did not ask for nor did I even know about it and only activated an old 3g phone because it was my only option. So I went to the store and got a razr maxx and re-signed my contract. The verizon system basically now hates all 3g phones and wants everyone off lol. The computer is what told the rep to give me the upgrade not me asking or the rep being stupid or any crooked activity.

How do you qualify for an early upgrade?

Not sure. Verizon rep on the phone told me as long as your going to a 4G phone I can do an early upgrade. Call and asked them. If they say yes have them put it in your notes so when you go to the store you have no problems.

To the people saying its wrong, HOW? Verizon is the only crook here. $30 upgrade fee, shared data plans ($50 for 1GB!). Screw them.

I bought 2 Droid Maxx for $243 with tax and upgrade fee. Sold one for $550 and the other for $535. Sold an old Droid incredible 2 for $180 and guess what... Pre ordered me a brand new Galaxy S3 to go along with my Gnex.

Nice! And now you have a new phone. Otherwise you would have lost your upgrade later on unless you want Verizon's new bend over shared data crap.

So if you have a couple upgrades.. you can purchase any phone you want and not be obligated to put those phones to one of your lines? Your aloud to use the upgrade and just tell them that you don't want to use it on one of your lines? Thats what I'm asking.. I guess.
