A new GPS icon?

I used to leave my GPS on and always had the icon (compass) up top. Now, after the 2.2 update, when I leave it on a second icon pops up next to it; it looks like a satellite dish with waves emitting from it. For what ever reason, the only way I can turn off the dish icon is by turning off my GPS and, since the dish icon is on, I lose battery power: I've never lost 80% in 8hrs while at work befor Froyo.

I've tried to disable/enable several settings in the wireless & networks but, no matter what I do, I still get the secondary satellite dish battery-sucking icon. Is there anyway to leave GPS on while not bringing up this secondary function? I just find it teadious to have to enable my GPS when I use it (a lot for work) and then have to disable it. A little help???

I believe the satellite dish icon with the waves emanating from it only occurs while it is actively seeking a GPS signal, once it has a lock it should just be the compass icon that you mentioned.

Perhaps you are not getting a good signal anymore.

Yea, the target/compass icon I believe just mean the gps itself is on. The satellite transmitting green waves mean the gps is actively searching for your location.

Compass doesn't eat up much battery. Satellite will kill it.

The compass icon means you have location service turned on. It will have a slash through it if you have it turned off.

If you have the dish icon on all the time, you have an app trying to constantly access the satellites. You need to track down what app is doing that.

But to answer part of your question OP, it's not a new icon. It was there before the 2.2 update. You've installed an app that is actively looking for a GPS location.
