About that fingerprint sensor (No, it's not the location)

Yes, I'm talking about the fingerprint sensor.

No, it's not the location (it's already been beaten to death, to the point where the S9 and likely the Note9 will have it centered below the camera where it probably should be all along) but I really need to say the other stuff that others don't seem interested in mentioning.

First of all, it's a tad slow. No, it's not super slow (it's quick in the grand scheme of things) but compared to some other phones like my mom's Honor 8 Pro, it is significantly slower. While the Note would unlock after a couple of milliseconds, the Honor was near-instant. I'd like to see some speed improvements next year. Furthermore, can we have a confirmation vibration when it is accepted? Having none when it is accepted but two for a failed one is weird to me.

And lastly, this is a $930 phone. That sensor should really be covered with glass. I've already had a hairline mark on it after a couple of months. It still works but for such an expensive phone, I don't know how much more it would have cost to put a small piece of glass on that sensor, especially since the much-cheaper OnePlus 5 has a ceramic piece over its FPS.

I don't hate my Note8 per se. It's been fantastic during my months of owning and using it. I just want to let out some of my concerns and experiences.

I guess I'm only going to say this so you have your first reply! I used the Fingerprint Sensor on my Note 4, 5, both 7's and my Galaxy S7 Active. However, I took one look at the " " and setup up my Iris and was done with it. Sorry, you said not to mention position! I never even setup up a finger print - Iris and PIN, that's all I've used since day one. Next!

EDIT - SEE POST Number 23!

Lol

I haven't had any issues with the FPS. I had an S8+ and now the Note 8 and both were quick and responsive. The position was NEVER an issue for me.

My iris scanner works great.
I set mine up originally with my glasses on. And moved around while it was initially scanning my eyes.
Maybe that helps.
But my iris scanner has only failed me in very bright light or sunlight. And even the iPhone x face unlock fails in those conditions.
It works soo good I use it more than my finger print scanner.
I really thought it was a gimmick at first. But. I was proven wrong.

Add me to the ones saying no problem with eyeglssses on.

Maybe it depends on the prescription... if you have coke bottle lenses...then maybe it’s gonna throw off the sensor :/ my prescription is not that bad.

I don't take mine off and it works fine.

The iris sensor actually works 8/10 times for me and is usually very quick in doing so.

I just feel that the FPS could do with improvements other than location.

Getting back to OP’s topic... I’ve mentioned elsewhere and agree... the FPS is slow.

I used the Iris almost exclusively in the beginning but have been using the FPS more often... I find it slow... I find it hit or miss accurate at times so I’m prepared at times to tap on the sensor 2...3...4 times quickly to get it to work to open to verify when I’m at the cashier counter using Samsung pay. It’s definitely not the most accurate or quickest sensor on the market.

I use it along more often along with iris just because it’s more convenient to get finger near sensor to use FPS than iris like when you already have phone at hand... the iris I like to use when i already have the phone close to face like when seeing notification on AOD... so I can just double tap on notification icon and my eyes are already in position and it opens immediately. Iris has been more consistent for me almost 100% at time compared go 75-80% with FPS.

I am conscious to keep finger free of debris before using sensor in fear of scratching. Agreed for a flagship phone, you’d wish theyd use sapphire for the sensor like Apple does for their FPS and camera lense cover. At least it’s not their sensors of past like the Note 7.

Sorry for turning this into an Iris discussion... it was not my intent!

Yep. They really should improve the speed and cover it with a more scratch resilient material.

The "Iris" works for Samsung Pay so I can't see why it wouldn't work for the others, though I haven't tried it with Citi yet!

The only time I have a problem with the iris scanner is when light is reflecting off my glasses. Otherwise, it works fine with glasses on, especially in the dark.

Citi, Chase, Amex... they don't use iris. Chick-fil-A, PayPal... I haven't come across a third party app that does use iris detection.
