I have moved to the S9 Plus (on Sprint), so I have not had the need to try this.
I do know others that have tried and it works if their device is ready to receive the update.

Nothing on Samsung Smart Switch for my unlocked S8 Plus. Have predownload updates checked. Oh well.

Just wanted to say that regardless whether or not updates are available, I find this utility great for backup.

Sadly didn't work for me but probably because I'm with AT&T! .
