Activating phone bought a few weeks ago...will it get update??

Tomorrow finally I am getting my Thunderbolt from work activated. They got it a few weeks ago and have it locked up, but I am getting it tomorrow. What will happen with respect to the update? Once they activate it and hand it to me will it ask to download the update?

And if not, what should I do? Can I make the newly activated Thunderbolt find the update and ask me to download it?

Settings software Update. Check for update.
