Activation question

Do you have to activate a phone you bought as an upgrade before giving it to someone else? I know if you add a line you don't have to as long as you activate a different phone on that line. A buddy bought an iPhone with his upgrade and is giving it to someone as a gift. It shows in his online account that his new upgrade date is 9/2013 so it looks like the terms of the new contract have been accepted already.

As long as the contract has been accepted then that's fine.

Depending on how you got the phone, generally the process of activating the phone is linked to accepting the contract (for example if you buy it online or via telesales, or via most indirect agents). but if you buy it in the store they should be able to have you sign the contract and not actually activate the phone.
