Very odd problem yesterday after having the phone for a few weeks. The adaptive brightness was not working properly. Happened while driving (navigating, using Maps) and after stopping at a fuel station. Display was very dark with battery at 80%. I had to go in a dark area so that I could even read the phone and manually adjust brightness. It was at 2%, crazy. I restarted the phone and then adaptive brightness worked fine.

I had a problem with my P6 a couple weeks ago. All of a sudden the adaptive brightness went wacko and began going very dim, then shot way up to max. Then it went all the way down again. It did that several times in a 5 minute period. I finally restarted the phone and it has been fine since.

I haven't experienced this bug. But do you have something installed on your phone that might have caused this issue like apps that are supposed to toggle things on/off?

I've experienced that bug a few times. Usually when it's dark I swipe down if I can see it from the notification area and just tap on the brightness slider and it comes back to a normal adaptive brightness

Not that I'm aware of. Seems to be minor bug which I hope will get fixed in an update.

I'm willing to bet it's not a bug. Isn't the sensor on the back of the phone in the camera bar? If you were blocking the sensor or left some oil from a finger on it probably could have caused the issue. It's like when my face unlock on my 4XL acts up. That's because it's time to wipe the top of the screen where the sensors are housed.

My sensor was not blocked. Extra dim was not toggled on, this suddenly happened while driving and restarting fixed it as someone else reported above.

My Pixel 4 did that from time to time. I think it happened on the P6 during the first day or two, but I haven't noticed it since. I think adaptive brightness may eventually learn your comfort zone from manual adjustments you make.
