Adding an application to HTC ERIS

Hello to everyone,
I have an old HTC ERIS which is in very good condition. I would like to utilize it as a storage device to listen to AUDIO Books. How can I add the Overdrive App to the old HTC?

I believe that Overdrive requires at least Android 2.2, and the Eris is stuck at 2.1. So, the only way that I know how is to root the phone and install a custom ROM with a newer version of Android (I'd suggest Android 2.3)
