Adding phrases to the Personal Dictionary

I'm trying to add phrases and a shortcut (text replacement) associated with it to speed up typing common long words or phrases.

It sounds straight forward enough...except it doesn't allow me to use spaces or any symbols in my personal dictionary word. There also doesn't appear to be a field to add an optional shortcut word associated with your personal word.

Does this sound right? It doesn't seem very functional to me!
