The biggest advantage I would say is the fact that it is newer. Support for the S3 will stop at 4.4, where as the S5 will get continued support for the next 18 months at least. By support, I mean OS updates.
Another benefit is updated hardware.

The s3 is two generations older, and has already been preceded by the S4. Newer hardware, and will support newer software.

That would depend on the device's history. If you're buying a retail device out-of-the-box, it will likely arrive running 4.0.4 as this is the software version it initially shipped with. In that case, you'll be prompted with system updates shortly after first powering the device on. If you're buying a used or refurbished model, it may have been updated already.
