Address Limit?

I'm about to join the millennium by jumping from my annoying Treo to a Droid X, but before taking the leap I need your help (oh please!). My addressbook has 2,000 entries and I'd like to import them all to the DX. I've searched here and elsewhere, but can't find a solid answer to this question: What is the addressbook/phonebook limit? The phone store guy just rolled his eyes and (after riffing on why anyone would have so many addresses) said it can't be done. Maybe there's a higher limit in the app than in Verizon's transfer setup, or a different address/phonebook app I can get that will accept 2k entries? Anyone know for sure?

Thanx. My impression was it had something to do with record count rather than size, but three other and perhaps more likely scenarios come to mind:
1. Verizon dweebs didn't want to bother with 2k items.
2. Google or whatever method they use has a limit.
3. The transfer aborts prematurely when encountering some Palm feature like attached photos or notes.

Do you know how to transfer all your contacts over to Google/Gmail (on the computer)? I'm not sure how you go about doing that from the Palm platform, but I bet you could find instructions on this forum somewhere. I would start there, because that it is probably an easier, more efficient way of eventually getting your contacts to a new Android phone compared to having someone at VZW doing it for you.

If Google/Gmail won't let you have 2,000 entries, then I think you are SOL. If you can get all of them onto your Google/Gmail account, I would hope (but do not know for sure) that you would then be able to have all of them on your phone as well. The Droid X (and all Android phones) sync quickly and easily from their associated Gmail account. I would think the only limitation once the contacts are in your gmail account is the phone memory capacity, which would be a non-issue on the X.
Good luck!

From the Getting Started with Android - Tips and Tricks:

Google Gmail
Android syncs with your Gmail account. So sign up now if you don't have one. Also, now is the time to transfer your old phone contacts to Gmail. The simple way is to use Google Sync to sync your old BlackBerry, iPhone, Nokia, or Windows phone to your Gmail account. When you set up your new Android phone, it will then automatically sync your email, calendar, and contacts with your Gmail account. You can forward your emails to Gmail but it is easier to let Gmail sync Outlook calendars, contacts, and emails. Your can store your information for free in your Google Account.

The updated Palm Desktop can sync with Outlook or better yet can output a CSV file that Gmail needs.

Still 2,000 entires is a lot of baggage for it to haul around. It could make things run more slowly.
