I remember vaguely seeing a menu for gps settings where i was able to set gps to only be used for 911 use. Well I cant find that menu even worse i cant remember what ROM i was useing. So I am hopeing someone might be more familiar with this menu and be able to point me in the right direction.

Not on the LG Optimus V only thing there is to turn it on or use wifi for location

911 services don't use your phone's GPS to find you. They use the fact that your phone scans multiple towers to triangulate you. As long as your phone is on, they can find you. Turning your GPS off merely stops apps from using it. If the app has high enough privilege, it can even turn it on and then use it. Your best bet is to use trusted apps if you don't want to be tracked.

Notice how your GPS icon flashes when you visit google.com even if you have google location services off? I find that interesting. :)

I am not trying to turn off my gps it is off. I have tryed tons of apps and none of them get any kinda of feed from my gps. I havent seen the gps icon show up for a week now. I am about 99% sure it was when I was in that menu where it had a choice to disable all user functionality and only allow "E911". And yes they can use the tower to locate u but if u read up on E911 it can use jsut about anything on u phone to help locate and investigate right down to useing the camera and mic but i dont care about that I just want to get back to that menu and turn it back on. But for the life of me i cant remember the app/ROM that had that menu. Till then I have no GPS for my own use.

I didn't know you were referring to a 911 app. My mistake. If the GPS is turned on in location services, then any app should be able to use it.

I am not referring to an app E911 is the new standard for 911 service. E just stands for Enhanced 911 which is just 911 with added digital services. Awhile back the US government passed bills requiring all cell phones to comply with the new E911 standard I think by 2012 even tho most 911 service areas wont be upgraded till well after that. But thats here nor there. My point is there is a way deep in the system to disable gps for everything but E911 as to comply with above said issues. I had an app or ROM that allowed me access to this within a menu and at the time i was trying to reduce battery use and i never really used the GPS in my phone bc i have a TomTom. So I choose to disable it and now I am suffering for the choice bc i cant remember how to get back to said menu and fix this issue. I can only hope someone who knows something happens across this thread.

Whats got me abit confused is that wipeing everything I could and useing a differant ROM didnt reset this choice. So there must be more data with this saved in it i cant get too and wipe.

Hmm, if it is a built in setting, try using launcherpro: homecscreen -> menu -> Add -> Shortcuts -> Activities ->

And then you can look under Settings, com.lge.hiddenmenu, and com.lge.LgHiddenMenu
If there is an option like that, it'll be there.

I was reading up on E911 just now....kind of scary and insecure.

Did you ever use cmda workshop? I think there is a option there to disable gps at the level your talking about. Atleast that is what was popping into my head.

Try stock. That should have all the settings.

Well I switched back to my Nandroid backup and didnt see anything that can help but I was wondering is there a factory reset that is safe to do?

If you have the stock rom and are unrooted with the stock recovery, you should technically be ok to do a factory reset, but I'm not 100% sure because I don't know what causes the factory reset error.

Before you do that, have you tested any other apps with the GPS? Like google maps? You know that the GPS icon only turns on when the app is trying to use it right? And that if you have the "wifi location" assist unchecked then it takes longer to find your location? If you can ever see the GPS icon in the taskbar, then the GPS is enabled. Also, have you tried the GPS outdoors or indoors? I'm just taking you through the thought process I would have if the GPS stopped working.

Sadly I have done the same thing trying to figure this out but the icon never even blinks in the taskbar and i have tryed many gps apps. I also dont have the stock recovery I am running thunderc. Well thanks for all the effort but I think this is hopeless till I just happen to remember how I got to the menu and what rom and app i was using. Now I am wondering if there is a file somewhere with the setting I could find and edit? Bet that like finding a needle in a hay stack.

Try this. Follow the PRL guide and get to the point where you "Read from Phone" and enter your MSL code.

Then go the very right of the tabs by hitting the right arrow in the upper right corner. You want to find the gpsOne tab. On my phone, every single check box on the left is checked. Even if it is greyed out, you can still check it. In the text boxes, they are all blank.

If yours is different, change it to match, and then hit "Write to Phone"

I had my hopes up for this but first I downloaded the new updated drivers from LG which jacked up my drivers bc for some reason half of them dont work for me(Vista64 home pre). So I had to go look for the older drivers and in my haste tryed installing before removing the newer one jacking them up even farther. Well needless to say I did get them out and get a clean install of the ones that work. Got my MSL code and COM# was at the gpsOne TAB just too see all my setting alrdy matched urs. All the checks were grayed out so I unchecked/rechecked all of them leaveing the txt fields empty and did the Write to Phone. Which scared me bc my whole computer froze up sound and all and my phone booted up. Happily my computer and phone all seem fine and functional but still not fixed :'(

have to be getting closer...

I remember a code like *3686* or something similar that let you get into some phone setting menus.

Maybe somebody can post the exact code. I am having hard time remembering it. Old age and all.
