Advanced Wi-Fi setting is confusing to understand on the LG-G2 with Lollipop 5.0.2

I go to Settings -> Networks tab -> Wi-Fi -> Advanced Wi-Fi -> "Switch to mobile data". The Internet access switching happens whether I have the box checked or not checked. So what is its purpose?
