Advantages/disadvantages of getting an unlocked phone vs Verizon

I've often toyed with the idea of getting an unlocked phone, rather than one from Verizon, and am considering this with the Note 10 (I now have a Note 8). I know some of the advantages include no Verizon "bloat" and the ability to go with any carrier, but, aside from that, what are the distinct advantages and disadvantages to getting an unlocked phone, rather than from the carrier? FWIW, I'm planning to stay with Verizon as a carrier.
