I'm looking for some ROM advice from Hero users. The situation is that my wife has the CDMA Hero which is currently running an older build of CM6, which has some issues. I set her up on this a while ago. I'm just looking for the best performing ROM (i.e. no lag) with the least issues (i.e. everything works). She's not interested in bells and whistles or constantly flashing updates, etc., so I'm looking for something I can just set her up with and not have to worry about it. Doesn't matter to me if it's Froyo or Gingerbread based, or AOSP or CM7, and we don't need Sense.

I have an Epic 4g which I flash/hack/mod all the time, and I already rooted and installed CM6 on her phone, so no worries there. I've been reading through a dozen or so Hero ROM threads for a few days, and given that each thread is over 100 pages, my head is swimming and I'm just not clear on what's generally accepted as the best performing hassle-free ROM. I know no ROM is perfect, but I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Over on the xda-developer forums under the HTC Hero CDMA Development section you have a much more broader availability to ROM's. For the best overall ROM without issues is aosp's Heroc ROM. Here is the link to the thread: [ROM] aospCMod | AOSP 2.3.4 / CM7+ (Gingerbread) - xda-developers
For reasons unknown to us, he no longer posts his ROM's on xda, but on his twitter here: Twitter
The newest build for the Hero is here: aospCMod-HEROC-20110523-signed.zip
For the Google Apps here: gapps-gb-20110325-signed.zip

Pretty much all of the Gingerbread ROMs that are out work fine...I'm using CM7 at the moment and things are going smooth. Make sure to download SetCPU, from the Market or XDA, and keep the phone clocked to 691 or more.

The only drawback to the AOSP ROMs (not the developer aosp) is that the Sprint Voicemail app only works with a bit of trickery...there is a how-to to get it up and running here: Install Sprint Visual Voicemail - ROMRepo

Otherwise, just use Google Voice and you'll not have to worry about the issue.

Thanks for the excellent advice - I had already started reading through many threads @XDA, and was leaning towards aospCmod. Installed it and wow, what a difference. The Hero flies now, it's like a new phone. We switched over to google voice so no worries re: sprint vvm. Will follow up re: setcpu, thanks.
