I have the chance to purchase a 3G/4G Xoom for $550. The person received as a gift but already had a tablet. The package has been opened but the the unit is brand new not used. I am deploying soon and wanted to get my girl a laptop so that we can communicate (email and Skype). This may be a better option. Good price, good laptop replacement? What do you think? TIA!

That's something none of us can answer for you. Is she in college? Highschool? would she use the laptop to type reports or papers? Does she do other things that a laptop may be better for her situation? If the ONLY reason you're getting her this is for skype, then yeah, it'll probably work fine. But you can get a decent laptop to type research papers etc for less than 550. You can get a REAL good laptop for 550. It's all about what you/she wants.

Nope she is done with college LOL. It would be used for basic surfing, communicating, etc. She writes her work appointments in a day planner. I figured with the tablet she could put them right into the calendar. Also I like the portability vs a laptop. I think i know what to do but is $550

I think Costco has Wifi versions on sale for $499 or something like that. If you want a warranty that might be a good option.

Considering I paid 800 for mine on day one from Verizon, to get it for 550 I would be happy with that deal. Since I got the Xoom I haven't thought one time that I needed a laptop. It does pretty much everything I needed.

I have two laptops in addition to my Xoom. One being a macbook that used all the time. Ever since I got my Xoom I have barely used any of my laptops.

I'd get her a brand new wifi version if that's all she needs it for. I think 3G/4G is a waste for a tablet if you already have a smartphone with a good enough display. On the other hand, my wife has a 3G iPad that she likes to lug around in her purse, so perhaps for some people cellular connectivity makes sense.
