I try several different ways to change my ringtone for notifications but no matter what I do, it keeps playing a low toned popping noise as the notification sound that I can't even hear. I did the OTA Froyo update yesterday and am using Launcher Pro. This was working fine on Launcher Pro pre-OTA update. Anyone have any ideas ?

DId you make the ringtone via RingDroid? This happened to me in 2.1 when I made ringtones via Ringdroid because the audio files were low quality.
Where exactly are you getting the ringtone?

Err, what ringtone are you using? Ones that come preinstalled?

Open the back cover and check your speaker for any metal shavings.

It doesn't matter if I try notification sounds that came with the phone or ones I downloaded from the app ZEDGE, the notification sounds just Won't change.

It wouldn't need to do with any metal shavings because this happened as a result of the Froyo update. It was perfectly fine right before the update.

Ok Weird thing is I can change the notification sound for my twitter, but not for my text messages

Is there a way to reboot the phone besides turning it on and off? Maybe thats a possible solution. I don't want to go back to factory settings because I don't want to lose all my apps :(

I am having the exact same trouble. I can't change my ringtone. And we're talkin ordinary .mp3's too. The context field will show up under "Music Options," but the options to set as ringtone or contact ID are grayed out.

If anybody figures out a work-around, I'd be ever so grateful if they'd post it. This is driving me nuts...

I have this issue too. Any fixes anyone? Sometime my ringtones and music player work, and other times I get a default droid ringing sound, and no music player. Help!

Where are you trying to change the ring tone? You going to home/settings/sound and changing the master notifications sound or are you trying to change it from within the app its self?

Later,
Dave

In my case I have been trying to set it via ringdroid however, I have also tried from the master settings as well.
