After Lollipop, is factory reset necessary?

Hi guys,

I'm an early adopter of Android (coming from iOS) and this is my first android phone. I've been reading and some posts suggest that I should do a factory reset after the update.

I wanna hear your thoughts about this, is it necessary? Knowing that android doesn't have a good backup system unlike iOS, it's time consuming to move everything back where it was. Do the benefits outweigh the cons? My G3 has never been rooted btw got no intentions to do so.

I don't have the G3, but with any Android, I normally reset after major updates myself. The old app and system cache files often conflict with the new OS. Something that might help with resetting up is if you get a third party launcher, like Nova, you can create a back up of that.

I would recommend that this be a last resort item. See my latest entry on page 6 of AT&T LG G3 update (2/10/15) LOLLIPOP! entry. My goal is to do everything I can realistically do as a user to get my device working well without having to factory reset. My opinion, other will differ

btw: A backup is always a good thing and there are several apps that can accomplish this.

I did NOT factory reset nor battery pull

Just worked after update

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I've seen the back up from nova launcher, thanks for the info. Sadly android doesn't have an all in one backup heh.

I haven't really had any issues about my phone, so I guess I'll stick to doing nothing. If any problems occur, I'll consider this as a last resort.

Yes! If you want your device to work at optimal performance, it would be in your best interest to factory reset. If you don't care about your device working at top performance, don't do it.

Didn't do a factory reset - no need - works quickly and smoothly, and has much better battery performance.

So resetting your phone would guarantee that?

How do you go about all your stuff being gone and put back in? The thought of it seems like too much work, especially android doesn't really have a nice backup system.

I'm happy with another performance and better battery life after the upgrade without a factory reset so don't see any need to do one.

All I did was a battery pull after updating Google Play Services. After that it was off to the races, no issues to speak of so far. I really think the factory reset is a case by case basis kind of thing, and as someone mentioned earlier, should probably be a last resort.

Could not agree more. Factory reset is the safest route you can take. The way I see it rather be safe then having a laggy phone with battery drainage. It will assure that everything is then running on the new software. Backup from nova makes it quick and easy. A factory reset is not necessary in the sense that your phone won't break if you don't do it but it's necessary to guarantee smooth performance.

Right now, I am considering changing to CM 12 from Slim, to try out Lolli on my M8. I am already planning out what I need to do for the reset (I normally do a Nandroid once every couple of weeks, and I am behind so this serves a dual purpose anyway). In fact, while typing this, I am already backing up what I need to.

Since my reset I haven't been able to get my live weather animations. Just tells me I have to "update weather interval" no matter which one I change it to it won't check that it worked. Very frustrated!

Well, I don't mess with anything unless I need to. I stick by my philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Of course I do back up prior, it's just prudent and to not do so in the event you need it would be foolish. Fortunately, in my case I didn't. I just can't see putting myself through any more hassle than is necessary. It hurts nothing to back up, do an in place upgrade, see how you like it first and then if it's not to your satisfaction go with the nuclear option.

In my opinion if it were absolutely essential to reset after every upgrade what a nightmare that would be. Just think about it. Your Average Joe wouldn't tolerate that kind of hassle. Most wouldn't know how or even be bothered to do so. The OEMs and Google would lose insane market share in short order over that kind of terrible PR.

Interesting feedback from everyone! I appreciate it, as I'm learning Android myself.

I just wish they had a good backup system, if I were to try to reset, to restore everything easily but they don't.

Actually it does have a backup system, when you add your Google account your contacts and apps will automatically sync.

As for launcher backups, use something like Nova as suggested.

Liquidsmooth has a tendency to have the UI crash on a daily basis. Otherwise it is a great ROM.

From an AOSP M8

Let me reword it, partial backup. Coming from iOS (where one backup saves the whole phone entirely), Android has a long way to go.

Anyway just for kicks I might do a reset tomorrow and just use LG's backup system. See if would really "optimize" my phone.
