Android Central Question

Whenever my device locks or times out it flashes white. Is this a software or hardware issue? Phones only a week old

re:

Mine is doing this again since the last software update. It was doing it when I initially bought the phone, was fixed in one of the monthly patches, and then started doing it again since the February patch.

re:

I've had my Pixel 2 XL for months now and never had this issue. However, I talked my wife into trying one (Verizon, 64G) and she has had the issue from day 1. Could it just be an issue with certain phones or is it a generic issue? If she has to return the phone it would be better to do it now rather than later.

I don't think the patch cured the problem May be an intermittent hardware issue. The only resolved ones I have seen were by swapping out units.

re:

I had this issue when I got my new unit from Best Buy last week. Was told people usually get it and it goes away over time. I already swapped one due to bad screen uniformity and didn't want to swap this one and get banned by the stupid TRE.

Since installing the Feb update I haven't had it happen once. People posting in XDA forums and Google I think too, have been denied RMA for this issue it seems.

If it starts happening again and Google refuses RMA I will make sure to record video of it happening and file a BBB complaint against them.

I've also read that other people get this problem on other hardware that has recently been updated to 8.1, so if true leads me to believe this really is a software bug.

What's the TRE?

If it starts happening again and Google refuses RMA I will make sure to record video of it happening and file a BBB complaint against them.

Not to rain on your parade but I don't think that'll do much. You'll be serving your cause better if you call Google out on social media channels.

I haven't heard of anyone getting denied RMA unless you don't cooperate with the process. They will make you go through some trouble shooting steps including a factory reset. Once you've gone through the motions and still indicate a problem they will RMA the unit.

If it were a hardware issue it wouldn't make sense that it stopped happening for 2 months, right after a software update and then started happening again right after another software update. Yes, it's intermittent, but it happens pretty frequently. At least once per day.

Hardware issues can be intermittent. If it was software more phones would be doing it. Mine did it after a factory reset with no 3rd party apps installed.

re:

my replacement device has not done this once, convinced it is hardware linked to the front sensor.

re:

Mine currently does not do this. This was a day 1 Pixel 2 XL from Verizon.

The Retail Equation. Best Buy and other merchants use this service to track returns and prevent fraud. If you get flagged you're banned from returns / exchanges for a year. Even for legit returns, it is ridiculous.

Yeah, filing BBB complaint is annoying, agree. Hopefully Google will be easy to deal with. Issues like this screen flashing make me appreciate Apple where I can just show it to a tech and immediately get a replacement. Rather than having to go through a million useless steps / treated like I've never used a phone before over the phone with someone and hope for RMA.

my 3 week old Pixel 2 XL started doing this but mine flashes when the screen times out. I have mine set for 1 minute. it goes black and then the flash

Same here.... I'm convinced it's hardware. Now that I recall there were reports of this before 8.1 update

re:

was on the phone with Google after following their instructions they said they'd send me a new phone. they gave me a choice to wait for the March 5th update but I'm also not convinced that it's a software issue. PS. you cannot create the issues while screen sharing with Google support.
