Alarm clock woke me up, and I thought I was having a nightmare

On my home screen I just have the Google widget which allows me to do a search or I can click the microphone icon next to the search field and then I would simply say set an alarm for tomorrow at 6 a.m.

It’s Bixby briefing that is giving you the news feed. When you set an alarm in this manner you can go to the clock app and edit the alarm. By default Bixby briefing is turned on. At least that’s the way it worked on mine when I tested what how you’re creating the alarm.

Ah good catch.

I was going to say I have used Google Assistant a ton for setting alarms. It literally just sets the alarm for the time I asked and the alarm goes off like normal. I only ever hear news if I say "Play me the news" then it goes.

I don't use Bixby, and I can't see that Bixby briefing is even installed. Where would I go to change the settings for that?

I can’t find anyway to adjust the content or sources that Bixby briefing uses. So as far as making any adjustments in that regard, there doesn’t seem to be a way of doing that currently. It is an optional component to any alarm you set along with allowing a snooze function, alarm sound, vibration and reading the time aloud when the alarm rings. All these functions can be edited when you set an alarm. Just tap on the clock app, select alarms and tap the alarm that you want to edit. You’ll get a new screen that displays the options.

Ok, that was it. I can now disable the news. It's kinda lame though, because it makes you turn it off every single time you set an alarm. Defeats the purpose of voice response ease, if after setting an alarm, you have to muck around to the settings and uncheck an option. Man I hate Bixby. Always have.

Woo! Glad you at least know your phone isn't possessed.

When I tell Google to set an alarm, it does so via Google's Clock app (which has no Bixby tie-in) rather than Samsung's Clock app. I don't see any setting for that app selection though and don't recall how it was set up, unless it happens automatically when you install the Clock app from Google.

Interesting. On mine (Att version) even with Google clock installed, any alarm set through Google voice commands goes to the stock Samsung clock app.

Try telling it to set an alarm without giving any details, and see if it offers a choice of apps. If so, see if a new choice sticks for future alarm requests.

Nope, no joy there. Stock app prevails and no ability to set default app. Cannot disable stock app.

Hm, unlocked phone or carrier brand? On my unlocked phone (N960U1), Google's clock is the sole option--I don't even get a choice to have it use Samsung's clock (even though that app is also installed and can't be removed or disabled).

Mine is an Att phone.

Found it: "Ok Google, set alarm" (omit the time). It'll show you your current default clock app at the top of the screen. Tap on that and it'll show you a list of clock apps. Choose the one you want and it'll become your new default.

Also, "set timer" uses a separate default, so you can implicitly choose your clock app each time by saying "timer" vs "alarm".

Nice work, that’s the fix!
