i assumed he was referring to the soft keys. isn't there a notification app for rooted phones that allows you to use the lighted soft keys as indicator lights?

Most, if not all, of the mat1x kernels have bln (back light notification) in them. You can set it up to blink, or stay lit with nstools from the market. This makes your soft keys your "led" notification. It works great.
