all IM clients keep Evo awake!

Well, I tried Meebo, Hi Yahoo, and MSN Droid. If any of those are running, then awake-time advances with up-time.

Is this by design, or is this what the hard reset fixes?

Being that they're always on and not apps integrated into Android system, the phone would have to be away to operate them.

Are you getting a significant battery drain leaving them running?

Yeah, the phone stays warm in my pocket ... about 1% drain every 3 minutes (that's headed towards 300 minutes or 5 hours.)

That seems poorly designed ... the apps can't sleep and be woken up via message from Android OS when a packet is received for them? That's like like basic OS design ... the phone should be able to be quite idle between network activities.

Well, for INSTANT messaging it requires a constant connection. Otherwise if you had delay you might as well send email. Gotta pay to play.
