All pictures deleted?

So I did a software update the other day. I THINK it was an HTC sense update but I'm not sure. I'm running android 5.0.2 and sense 6.0.

After the phone finished installing and rebooted I noticed almost all of my pictures were gone from most of my folders in the Gallery. A couple of pictures remained but they were all from before July 5, 2014 - everything after that is gone. Except, almost all videos remain, weirdly enough.

Even photos in my download folder are from before July 2014 and nothing after.

I've gone into file manager and looked under DCIM and there's nothing in any folder except in 100MEDIA where the remaining photos and videos are, and in the downloads folder the only pictures are the ones from July.

So basically most of the pictures on my phone, regardless if they were taken with the camera or downloaded are gone without a trace.

Any idea where they might be? Most of my pictures are on dropbox so it's fine, but not the downloads. Also, it's just weird that they're gone and I figured I should get to the bottom of this.
