Hello all. I'm wondering if anyone on here uses an app that is a good alternative to carrier's sms/mms service. I'd like to ditch my text plan completely by using something that will send messages directly to a contacts phone like a regular text message does. I don't want to use anything that requires others to download an app. I guess i want it to be transparent to the recipients. Thanks in advance.

Google voice was what I was going to suggest however it only supports SMS, it doesn't do MMS. For SMS it is completely transparent to the recipient.

However for MMS I find that G+ is a great alternative even if one doesn't want to use it for social networking. But with this option for MMS it isn't quite so transparent to the recipient.

Unfortunately, if you want to communicate via text/instant message, the recipient has to be able to support it as well.

Fortunately, Google Talk is available to pretty much everybody, and it's installed on pretty much every device I've ever laid eyes on. Although the recipients will have to set up their gTalk apps.
