Am I being stupid here? Icon Rows and columns question

OK I must be missing something here.

The default number of icons and rows on the home screen seems to be 4X4. Is there a setting somewhere to change it without going to a home replacement app?

you would have to use another launcher. Or you can use multicon or similar to put 4 icons in the place of one icon.
