I have an AT&T note 4 and haven't been asked to update to lollipop. I've read about AT&T finally releasing it. Whenever I go to manual update, it says I'm up to date.

Welcome to Android Central! Sorry for the basic question, but are you still on the AT&T network? Or do you have an AT&T phone that you unlocked and are using on a non-AT&T network?

Although AT&T owns Cricket, I wonder if the phone needs to be on the actual AT&T network in order to update.

You could try bringing it to a Best Buy and asking the Samsung Store to flash the update (assuming it's available for your specific model).
