How can I tell if my Gnex is locked or unlocked?
I did the unlock/root a while back and then restored it to stock but I don't know if it is still unlocked.

Is there a way to tell?

Absolutely!

When you boot your phone, the Google logo will appear for a moment. During this screen, at the bottom you will see an unlocked icon. If no icon shows, you're locked.

Also power down, hold both volume buttons and power to boot into the bootloader. On the bottom you will see in red text locked or unlocked. From there hit power again to boot normally.

How do you know if you have stock recovery?

Boot to bootloader using my earlier instructions, scroll to Recovery using volume keys and hit power.

If you get a dead android with a red triangle you are looking at stock recovery (press both volumes together to move forward and find a reboot option). If you see anything else its a custom one.

I'm still trying to understand what unlocked is? I rooted my DROID incredible before I got nexus. What additional benefit do I get unlocking vs when I just rooted incredible and could install custom roms via rom manager?

Read my Don't Panic guide.

In sure, unlocking the bootloader allows you--the end user--to install a variety of stuff on your phone, including unsigned packages, kernels, etc. When the bootloader is locked, you cannot make those changes.

So, is going S-off on Inc the same as unlocking the bootloader on nexus?
