Amazon’s Kindle Fire will be a $199 7-inch tablet running a highly customized UI of open source Android 2.3, this UI is optimized for delivering Amazon content. To reach that price, the Kindle Fire is heavily trimmed-down slate (similiar to BB Playbook, but less hardware) to hit that price; it will also come with a 30 day trial of Amazon Prime. I think it will be successful since price content are paramount to success.

Specs:
WiFi, no 3G option
8GB of on-board storage
1GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor
512 megs RAM
7" Gorilla Glass IPS Display runs at 1024 x 600
Amazon Silk browser
14.6 ounces
Micro-USB port
Speakers at the top with 3.5mm stereo jack
Free Amazon cloud storage for all your Amazon content
Battery lasts 8 hours with WiFi off
No camera, microphone, or SD slot

I am totally fine with no camera and microphone, and no multi-touch for that matter. 8GB is a tad small..I assume it has an SD slot? Also, will it be a micro or mini USB port for charging?

Not sure on the SD slot, the Kindle 3 didn't have one. It seems micro-USB is the standard for charging/connecting to your computer on new devices.

Android 2.1 with no SD and no access to Android Market? Great as an Amazon toy, but I think a Viewsonic Gtablet that is routed makes more sense. $250 instead of $199, but you get a 10.1 screen, SD and access to android market. If you need a smaller form factor go with the Archos 7 that will be coming out.

Or you could get a nook color off of ebay for around $150 and put cm7 on it. Solves all those problems plus it is a sexy looking little 7 incher

According to this site its running 2.3. Sooo yeah who said 2.1? Anyway i am getting regardless. 2.3 is a decent version of android and for the price i am picking this up regardless of the version of android and the no camera. I dont use very much on my laptop, maybe once a month but really outside of that thats it. As far as bluetooth goes i dont use that either, gps i use on my phone and i have two garmins in the house. The storage space is good for me since i will store some songs in the cloud and some on the device. Only the song i love go onto any of my devices. everythig else i can listen to at home in peace. I am on board. I hope the cpu speed is nice, i am not expecting a tegra 2 here in terms of graphics but who cares really. Its dual core.

Does anyone know if the battery is user replaceable? Big problem if not.

The tablet is so thin I don't think you can get a better battery. You could buy another normal battery to get another 8 hours out of it.

Chance's are I will add battery time with my Energizer XP18000. Already have a micro-USB plug for it.

After my d3, my next tablet must have hdmi mirroring. I haven't seen any source that says yay or nay on hdmi for the fire.

You'd think that since they want you to consume media on this thing hdmi would have been a priority.

The tablet only has a micro-USB, so you can't hook up your Fire to your TV. That does seems bad for a device that is for media consumption.

Eh, that's too bad. Would've been a great upgrade from my nook color. I suppose it still would be, but I want hdmi out of my next tab.

Re: Amazon Kindle Fire $199 7-Inch

You guys are forgetting that this is a cloud based tablet and thats why theres no sd slot and not a lot of internal storage. The tablet is meant to run off amazons cloud and thats what your going to see more and more.

As much as I want a wifi only device, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to rely so much on the cloud without 3g.

Great point.

Additionally. Underground subway folks like me will find 8Gb - overhead a bit tight.
