How is this working for everyone? It says it turns on when you receive a notification or pick the phone up but mine only works when I get a notification. I can't for the life of me get it to come on by just picking the phone up. I'm even picking it up and shaking it around to no avail. Anyone having any luck?

Mine seems to be working pretty consistently. Both when I get a notification and pick the phone up or give it a little shake back and forth on the table.

If you use the button to turn off screen, it doesnt work by moving. If you let it doze on its own, it should notice movement. Mine does anyways. All I have to do is barely tip it.

If this is true, then Google is not all that bright. Maybe I'm in the minority but I tend to turn off the screen manually, always.

Same here, one of the things I loved about my Droid Turbo was I could wave my hand over it and the display would come on. Not so with the 5x, but I'll try not turning it off and see if that works.

well, this phone will never behave like Moto's implementation. Moto puts extra sensors on the face of the phone to detect the waving of a hand, etc.

see in this photo the 2 black dots on the bottom of the phone? that's the extra sensors that the 5x and no other phone besides Moto has.

Yeah, I guess I was hoping it would be like the Moto G I had for awhile. It didn't have the sensors to detect you waving your hand over it but I could tap the screen and it would wobble enough to turn on the screen and show my notifications or lack thereof. This one I have to shake it like a polaroid picture and it still doesn't work.

Not sure I agree with this...I generally turn mine off with the power button and picking it up turns on the display...

That's not how mine behaves. Regardless of how the screen turns off (with the power button or on its own), the ambient display will come on if I pick up the phone or give it a shake. Not saying you're wrong or anything, just that it doesn't sound like your device is working properly.

gotcha. yeah, Moto's implementation is called something different (escapes my mind right now) so I bet they even have the accelerometer tapped in differently than stock android's "ambient display". I know when I had the recent Moto X Pure Edition, I tried stock android's version vs Moto's and Moto's was hands down better in the way it interacted.

Too bad Google can't implement the same a Moto. I thought they still owned Moto so they should have the rights to make this happen.

i personally don't' really like the Ambient display feature. find it buggy and probably wasting battery. the notification led works just fine and i can still see a notification came in even if i am not right next to my phone.

From what I understand, it uses the secondary subprocessor which allows it to consume low levels of battery. I would be interested to see how much battery you would actually save.

Ha! I just tried it again and now it does come on either way. Must've been some sort of temporary thing where the sub-processor was occupied for some reason?

I like the feature though. Battery does not seem compromised at all for me anyways.

Glad to hear it's working for ya. I agree, it's a cool feature. I'm not too worried about battery life since my phone spends most of its downtime in my pocket. I assume (or thought I read) that the ambient display only activates when the phone has been sitting on a table? Don't want to be **** dialing people

If you have any security at all on your device (Password/PIN/Pattern/Fingerprint), you wouldn't pocket dial anyone from Ambient Display. You still need to unlock the device.
