Ambient light sensor problem?

Today, I noticed that my phone's light sensor doesn't read values lower than 160 lux, even in a completely dark room. No wonder I've never been happy with auto brightness!

Is this likely a hardware issue, or ROM related (happens on Skyraider and Newt's HD rom).
Or could it be my screen protector?
I'm not totally sure where exactly the sensor is located. The manual doesn't mention it at all. Somewhere near the Verizon logo?

Have you solved this? My incredible S is exhibiting the same.

No, but I *have* found out that this is by design, for this phone.
I'm hoping someone who knows more than I do will eventually enable the missing settings in the kernel.
For now, I'm using "Total Screen Control" for the brightness settings.
