Amusement Park, water, and Nexus

We are planning a trip to an amusement park next week. There are a few water rides we will likely go on. I plan on putting my phone in a zip lock bag inside a waist pouch for those rides. I am not worried about water getting in to the phone. But I am wondering if putting the phone inside a water tight bag with it turned on will sufficate it? Does it need air circulation?

It is a self-aware, sentient robot... (not unlike Skynet, I'm afraid )


As someone who has drowned/killed a Galaxy Nexus, I highly recommend calling
Verizon to add on the insurance. However, I do believe that it can only be done within
30 days of purchase, at least that was the policy back in December.

They have special bags with 2 zip locks. I recommend one of those for water.

Should be fine without air circulation. I suggest turning on airplane mode when not using it, it won't last a whole day at a water park. Also, it's black, so keep it out of the sun if you don't want a hot device.

I have the extended battery plus I have an extra battery I can take. How much will putting it in airplane mode help the battery? Is it significant and worth doing?

Tons if your screen is off and you have no data connection there is nothing on your phone to be draining power from it should make it last twice as long.

Strikes me as odd... if I'm not using my phone at all I could manage well over 24 hours on a charge, easily.. probably closer to 30-35, depending on various factors. Would likely have to switch to 3G only, sure, but still, I don't believe airplane mode should be necessary to get through just one day with no use, lol. Standard screen off idle drain over 3G should probably be less than 2% per hour unless you're in a really bad service area or have some weird apps draining you.

True. I know for my self I sync to match stuff to frequently if I need to make if through a day without being able to charge I need to put it in airplane mode but I'm also not your average user.

Mine barely lasts 5 hours on a single charge. I'm at the highest echelons of phone usage, though. Forced to carry a charger everywhere I go. 4.0.4 update helped, but not much.

Depending on the coverage in the area, even with the phone not being used, it could still run the battery down. I apparently have a few background processes running as I can get 12 hours on a battery charge but that is usually only 1-1.5 hr of screen on time. I typically use my phone more at parks and kill the battery quicker Areas of low signal or some buildings, destroy my phone quick. I can save it by using airplane mode or turning data off.

I have done the double ziplock bag trick at the lake though. Worked fine.

YES. The screen and searching for a data connection are the largest battery vampires there are. The 3G radios use a lot of power look for a connection when signal is weak. Note that airplane mode kill the GPS, so pictures you take with the phone won't be geotagged if you do that. The camera also uses a bunch of power, so use it sparingly.

You may want to get an external battery that charges the phone over USB to alleviate concerns. The Mobi Juice pack is the one I use, but Moto makes one and there is a $50 one for the PlayStation Vita that should work.

Monkey Pi,

I am the OP. First of all I am not going to a water park. It is an amusement park with only three water type rides where you can get wet.

Second of all I am not a heavy phone user. In fact I am a very light phone user. I expect to make zero calls while at the park and only look to turn the screen on to check the weather occasionally, especially if there is a storm coming or something like that. I will not be playing games, surfing the web or watching video while at the park.

The phone will be turned on but with the screen off while at the park and safely tucked away in a zip lock bag and in my waist pouch. I fully expect the battery (extended) to last the whole day because two weeks ago I went all day on a charge and that was with multiple phone calls that day. I was only down to about 48% by 8:00 PM and my day started at 6:00 AM.

I do plan on taking my spare original battery just in case it doesn't last all day and I would need to use the phone for some reason before getting back to the car.
