Is there a newer app that I can use to send SMS, maybe type, etc - using Bluetooth, WiFi, or even hook it up to the computer?

I found some, but the SMS needs to be replied to or the device needs to the rooted

Thank you!

I use google voice. I can send txt from PC, in Android using voice app.
I can also manage voice mail using this app.

+1 for Google Voice. Worked fine for SMS but I had to install GrooVe IP to make voice calls from my Nexus 7.

Take a look at PopMyPhone. Install it on your phone and you can then use email to send/receive SMS via your phone. It will also alert you to missed calls, and help you locate a missing phone. All in one app. Using email means you can pick up SMS messages wherever you are. On a Nexus 7, on a hotel computer, on your laptop while in meetings. They all work.

In the states, Google Voice is awesome. If you use Google Chrome, you can also install the extension to SMS people from the web browser. So cool! =D

MightyText is a Chrome extension I've been using for years on the computer. They have just come out with an app for tablets--it's still in beta--and it works wonderfully. It notifies me of phone calls and texts. There's another app called Tablet Talk, and it works well, too. I used that for awhile, but I prefer MightyText over all.
