I got my Nexus 9 yesterday from Amazon and within a minute of powering it up I knew the unit was going back. The upper 1/4 inch of the display is much brighter than the rest of the display. I can even see it on near white backgrounds in a brightly lit room. I think it is more a screen defect and not light bleed.

So the question became do I replace the Nexus 9 or write it off as a failed experiment?

After playing with the unit for a day I think there is enough I like to get a replacement Nexus 9. The unit is very fast and the responsive. The buttons are a little flat and hidden, but OK. The placement is still flawed like the Nexus 7 with the power button being too close to the volume rocker. This makes it too easy to hit the power button as put the unit into sleep mode when trying to change volume. iPads have their power buttons on a different side to avoid this issue. The device gets pretty warm right by the camera, but that seemed to disappear after it finished downloaded the dozens of app updates. While playing youtube videos and web surfing I could not detect any heating. In general the new device is really nice.

Therefore I am now playing the old Nexus roulette game where you order the device from another supplier and hope it does not have defects. Only after you get the replacement device do you send the defective device back to the previous supplier.

This time I ordered the replacement device from Google and hope it is defect free. Wish me luck.

Good luck! That sounds like an odd defect. Is that top part of the screen noticeably brighter only when the screen is displaying a brightly colored page? What if it's a dark background?

FYI I ordered mine directly from Google and so far (knock on wood) no major issues and I'm quite happy with it...

The background color does not matter. Looking at it under a magnifier I think there is shield/deflector that cuts off the back light. This shield runs the length of the edge and in my case it is a little too high. This is causing a light to spill out 1/4 inch or so to far. But the spillage is not a pool of light like other people have seen. It is a band of light you can lay a ruler on. The band is almost perfectly straight and its width is constantly 1/4 inch or so.
