Android 4.1.1 has no sounds on youtube and videos not in 3pg format?

[Android Central Question]

I have a tablet which runs android 4.1.1.
It has all the system sounds alright, it plays the sound if I do a recording of sound or video (which is in 3gp format), but has no sound on youtube or downloaded videos (mp4 etc).

what I already tried:
Deleting cache (of youtube app, video player app, of the whole system on boot)
Hard reset the device completely
update device and apps to the last compatible version with android 4.1.1

Welcome to Android Central! Are you saying that when you watch a YouTube video using the YouTube app, there's still no sound? Or are you downloading the YouTube video using some 3rd party app (which, BTW, violates the YouTube terms of service)?

Which media player are you using? Be aware that support for 4.1.1 might be questionable these days. Support for ICS was officially dropped recently, so Jellybean probably isn't far behind.

I've tried the built-in media player and MX player. now I found out MX player plays the sound on videos I play from the device if I set the decoding to software instead of hardware.

I still can't find a way to make youtube play sound. No, I'm not downloading from it, I want to watch on youtube app.
