News Android and iPhone users told to pause texting each other amid major security threat

I know that I'm going to immediately listen to the "experts" and move through my nearly 1,000 contacts, attempt to identify those who are iPhone users, and try to persuade them to download a mutually agreed upon app that will allow us to "safely" communicate until such time as the "experts" say it's safe to return to normal.

I find the news on this to be a bit perplexing, since folks have been screaming for years that there should not be an expectation of security/privacy for SMS/MMS messages.

Maybe it's basically also propaganda, to try to influence the GSM consortium and Apple/Google to get on with it for actual end-to-end encryption for RCS cross platform iOS/Android.
