Hello All,

I have been trying for weeks to get Android Auto working in my Flip 5.

I have tried 4 different cables, re-installing AA, clearing the cache, restarting the phone even installed an older version of AA incase there was a bug but nothing, all it does is charge the phone. I also wiped my phone from the infotainment in my Jag and it still doesn't work.

Should I just go down the wireless adapter route or is there something else I'm missing? the phone didn't come with an official cable (I don't think they come with any new phones these days!) if I could find an official cable would that help?

Just a few questions.

Did AA work in your car previously with another device before you got the Flip?

Are you still using the same cable?

When you connect, have you opened the notification bar on the phone and scrolled down to the USB options and made any selections?

Have you connected your phone to a PC with one of the cables and tried accessing the phone's storage?

If AA worked before with the same cable and a different device it is likely something on the new phone. It shouldn't be your AA version, so go ahead and reinstall the latest version. I would guess it's more than likely how your phone is seeing the USB connection. In your notifications when connected via USB there is usually a notification for the USB connection, denoted by that 3 finger USB icon. If you touch this icon it opens options for what to do with the connection. The options are usually, charge only, connect as a storage device, and few others, be sure your option is something that sounds like it will connect as an AA device to your car stereo. If you have a newer stereo some devices can connect wirelessly, so I would also try pairing your phone to the stereo and seeing what options that affords you.

It's rare but not unheard of to still find cables that are charge only, but if you can connect to a PC or laptop and access files on the device that cable should be good enough. Having an "official" cable wouldn't make any difference in this case. Android, well Samsung anyway, isn't like Apple trying to hinder users at every turn to force them to use "official" this or that. For the most part a cable is a cable and making charge only cables is probably not very profitable these days. Just saying. Use the cable to connect to a PC and be sure to check the USB connection notification, as mentioned above, to be sure your connection is being recognized correctly.

Let us know what you find and we can offer advice from there.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.

I have never used AA before but weirdly, I connected the phone last night just on the off chance it would work and it did! I then unplugged the cable, plugged it back in again and it wouldn't connect 😭

So the cable must be ok I'm guessing? I can't connect wirelessly as my car isn't capable of that.

I guess it could be possible that the cable is bad or damaged if it worked and didn't after being plugged back in, like it was having a bad connection, but it sounded like you tried more than one cable in your first post. That could mean there's an issue with the receptacle on the stereo but I would think that would be a longer shot than a bad cable. If you didn't before, try another cable, and if you have try plugging it in again and also checking your notification panel for the USB icon. See what your connection type is and be sure it isn't in charge only.

What year is your Infotainment system? Before 2020 those systems only allowed AA and whatever Apple has, and only via USB. In 2020 and newer, it began to allow phone mirroring, where you could open almost any app and display it on your Infotainment system screen without Android Auto. I thought it was in 2022 they began connecting AA wirelessly, but Google tells me it wasn't until 2024. I still feel like I heard about this more than a year ago.

Let us know what you find.
