Android Auto forces Priority Mode. Why? How can I change it?

Running AA on a Nexus 6P on Oreo - I noticed that turning on AA puts the phone in Priority Mode, allowing only calls and messages from my contacts, and I can't find any place in AA, Maps or general phone Settings to change this. Anyone know why this is or how to change it to allow all calls/messages? TIA
