Ok I finally figured out what the problem was. Bluetooth was interfering with the android auto connection. The first time my phone lost connection to the honda display screen was after I had paired it to my friend's Bluetooth portable speaker. The second time my phone stopped, I received a phone call while driving. It instantly stopped auto android, closed the program on the screen, and said my phone was no longer connected through the usb. I tried all the usual uninstalling and repairing and toggling Bluetooth on and off. But what finally worked was going under developer options, networking, and changing "set usb configuration" to MTP media transfer protocol. For some reason when my Bluetooth kicks in, it changes my usb configuration to "charging only." this is why when plugged into my car nothing connects on the screen but the car will still charge my phone. I read about this MTP setting somewhere online but forget where now. Hope this can help someone else.
