Android Auto on Edge s7 & Pioneer headunit

So i just switched over to Android after years on the iPhone. So far I love it, but one of the reasons I switched is to use Android Auto which seems to be a lot better than CarPlay. I have a Pioneer AVHX2700BS headunit, which I know does not support Android Auto. However, it does support Mirrorplay, which I can't seem to get to work either (side issue). I saw back in April or May, that Google made it so you can run Android Auto through just your phone now.....but when I open the app, it just continuously says connect to car. When I connect with the USB, nothing happens.... Any help!?

The standalone mode of Android Auto was announced but won't be available until later this year - nothing firm yet
