Android Auto Question

So my last Android device was a Galaxy Note 5, at the moment my son is using it and I'm using a iPhone 6s+. I want to come back to Android and think the Note 7 would be my next device however I have questions regarding how Android Auto works with regards to music. My vehicle is a '16 Silverado and its radio/ receiver is Apple Carplay/ Android Auto compatible. I've been using the iPhone in it since I got it and like that if I don't want to stream music from an online source I can play whatever I have stored on my iPhone. I've been doing a little research and I'm not seeing that I get the same functionality from Android, can any of you who may use or have used AA confirm or elaborate as to how you've got it setup so you can play your downloaded music and not merely depend on stream apps? (yeah, I know I've got the radio also)
