Android Messages App Using 10GB

I sorted my apps in the play store according to size and it listed the Messages app first using a whopping 10GB of space. When I looked at the storage size in the phones settings the apps cache is nearly 6GB. I'm using a Pixel2 XL BTW. Should I clear the cache or will that have some negative effects on my current text threads? Also will clearing the cache only offer a temporary fix? When you clear cache on Photos I know it simply refills and in a day or so it's back to where it was before deleting it. Thanks!
