Android messages not loading current picture text

Hi there, first time asking a question on here so please pardon any incorrect posting procedures.

I have a Pixel 2 with Android messages as my default texting tool. Recently, I noticed a super annoying issue (not really a big deal, but worth just switching to another texting platform if it can't be corrected.)

If I receive a text with a picture, when I click on the picture to view it bigger (not just within the text), it'll revert to the last picture I was sent in that thread. If I close the picture, then click back onto the picture from the text thread, then it'll show.

My phone storage is good (35gb free) so I don't think that is the problem. What could be doing this?

I have cleared the cache and the data within settings of the Android messages and that doesn't seem to have fixed it either.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I've had that happen sporadically, but mostly it works as it should. Maybe keep with it a while longer and see if it corrects itself.
