I've recently come from the BlackBerry environment. I was always compulsive about turning off apps when not using them, to save memory . In the Android OS does it make any difference in memory usage whether you just go back to the home screen, leaving the app open, or carefully exit backward through all the open windows of the app?

The android is is great at managing apps, you don't have to back out. There is also a recent apps window in jb that you can either go back to an app or close apps very quickly. Welcome to ac forums! :)

Android works the exact opposite that you expect. It wants apps to stay in memory. It can open them faster. Android will also self kill apps for anything you need. Now, for your question, I would say it depends on the app you open. For the most part, if you are done with it, hit back till you close it. If an app that you need to leave momentarily, and are going to go right back to, hit Home.

I've found some apps are worth closing out of a specific way for one reason or another. For example, if you just hit home to exit Dolphin browser it will leave all of your tabs open, but if you hit menu>exit it will close all of them. You can also close all of them by force closing the app.

Also, every once in a while an app will go "rogue" and take up more battery than usual. Forcing an app like that to close is a good idea as well.

Otherwise, most of the time it's just as good to leave the apps running. I'm not sure I'm convinced that Android does a "great" job of managing memory as I have to restart my phone (and every other Android phone I've owned) every few weeks to keep it running well, but I don't think obsessively closing apps will change that.

Thanks for the feedback. It just seems somehow wrong to leave 'em all open :-)

Really depends on what phone you get I guess. I have a gnex and the only app the messes with my phone is maps will eat some memory and stock android,at least to me, is the best option :)
