Android or iPhone?

Hi, my current smartphone is the HTC One M8. I've been an Android user for the last few years, but I'm thinking about switching to an iPhone 6 when I get my upgrade in April. I keep going back and forth between the iPhone or one of the next gen Android flagships(GS6, M9, G4). I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of each ahead of time so I don't make a decision I regret. Has anyone on here made the switch either way? Just curious what any AC Forums member thinks about the subject. Thanks.

stick with Android if you like to customize and tinker. stick with Android if you like choice, openness, and freedom.

This is about the most common advice I hear. Vice versa, iPhones ate good if you want something with greater stability. It works, but only works one way with them. Speaking as an M8 user myself, I'd be hard pressed to to even think of replacing this phone yet.

I'm not really a tinkerer, and I don't customize much except the order of shortcuts on the home screen.

Stick with Android. I never had a smartphone just iPod Touch's but I hated iOS. I could not use a custom launcher as iOS 7-8 was so ugly to me and come on only 9 icons in a folder would show at once. I could not even run widgets which I love now. Even a simple app like a WiFi scanner required a Jailbroken device.

When I first got my Nexus 7 table I fell in love with Android a OS that actually lets you customize it. Then after I got a Nexus 5 my first smartphone though T-Mobile and now I never want to get a iPhone or any Apple product again. They are just overrated, overpriced junk that you can't do anything without hacking the device.

Anybody else have an opinion? Really thought more people on this forum would chime in on this.

I haven't gotten an iPhone but after years and years of android, I got an iPad last January and I've stuck with it. I like it a lot. I have everything in folders so I don't have icons all over the screens. I know everyone says that iOS is simple, but I had a bit of a learning curve since I had never used it. I think you could be happy with whatever you choose. I've been looking at iPhone 6s for my boyfriend which would be his first iPhone. Sometimes I think change is fun, if you hate it, come back.

i think you'll regret it. Android has you spoiled. freedom is something you take for granted until you no longer have it. Apple's chains will quickly grow heavy.

good luck.

Something to consider is that the quality of apps on Google Play is a lot lower than the iPhone. Google has a policy of allowing anyone to put anything they want onto Google Play while Apple scrutinizes apps it puts onto is appstore. A lot of iPhone users who switch to Android are shocked at the level of junk on Google Play. The only apps Android users tend to use are the ones developed by Google like the Google Maps, Youtube etc.

There a millions of android users and I'm having a hard time believing I'm the only one for which this is patently false. In fact, the only Google app I use regularly is Gmail. While the Play Store's offering may not always have the quality found in the App store what you're alluding to is simply false IMO.

I seen a lot of junk on Apples App Store too except that there are many quality apps that they don't allow for customization and they are always pulling apps. I purchased apps on the App Store that later I got screwed with because they were pulled all the time.

Being a Android forum, you can expect lots of pro-Android comments here (including mine!). I used an iPhone about 5 years ago, then aWebOS phone and now Android for 4 years or so, and I wouldn't switch back to an iPhone. After using KitKat, I find it hard to use my wife's iPhone 6. And, I don't see any advantage that an iPhone has over my HTC One.

So, why are you considering an iPhone? Are you bored with your current phone, or are you curious about iOS? Is there somehing you really like about the iPhone?

Well I really like the hardware; I think they are very well built phones. And now that Apple has increased the screen size to a respectable level it has me seriously considering the iPhone again. I owned an iPhone 4 and 5, but when the bigger screened Android phones started coming out I made the switch. I've been all Android for almost 2 1/2 years, and kinda want to try something different.

You could always make the switch using some kind of Jump or Edge plan that will allow you to upgrade phones early in the future, or purchase it outright. If you purchase it outright, you'd probably have no problems selling it should you decide that you want to head back to Android.

Longtime Android fan switches to the iPhone 6 and ‘instantly’ regrets it

What did Oppetit dislike about the iPhone 6? Pretty much everything. His biggest pet peeve was that he found it much more difficult to share information and data between apps on iOS than on Android.

“On my Nexus I could share stuff from any app to any other app,” he writes. “Pocket to Gmail, Chrome to Whatsapp, Evernote to Asana, you name it. Now on iOS I can only share stuff with the apps that have been properly integrated (that’s the technical term) with iOS. That means I cannot easily share this picture of Renee Zellweger’s metamorphosis (which I learned about last night) from Chrome to Whatsapp. Or Chrome to Gmail.”

Oppetit also misses how easy it is to customize Android with third-party launchers as well as how well mobile apps on Android integrate with mobile web browsers. And for good measure, he rants about not having a dedicated back button, about how inferior Siri is to Google Now, and how Apple’s App Store search and discovery “is a mess.”

The idea that the App Store has way more quality apps is simply false today. A few years ago you could easily make that argument but Google has done a fantastic job closing the gap. I'm sure there are still areas where it lags behind but I think you could make an argument that the Play Store excels in areas where the App Store might be deficient. Like Haalcyon I use a multitude of apps and am not solely dependent on Google's offerings.

It would be worth it to take a look at things when you got the M8. Did you have anything your really missed from iOS? It would also be a good exercise (if you still have your old iPhone) to power it up and play with the OS again for a few days. Once you get home throw an old iPhone in your pocket and use that for the rest of the day when you don't have to have a data connection. See if there's anything that really catches your fancy in iOS or if there's anything you really miss from Android. iOS has gotten some pretty solid upgrades in 2.5 years and it would be worth taking a look at.

It's also worth taking a look at Lollipop and see what you think (I don't know if you're running 5.0 yet or not). It's a pretty big change and one that has a lot of people divided. See if you can check that out before making a decision. It's possible it could be a dealbreaker for you.

I had a few iPod Touches for around 6 years and really enjoyed things but eventually got bored with the OS and moved to an Android phone. I haven't looked back but if you're thinking about it it's worth playing around with the latest and greatest from both and seeing what you like or dislike. Who knows, maybe you'll decide you hate both and end up with a Blackberry!

You've all made some good points in your posts. Those are some of the factors that I'm considering. Additionally the fact that iPhones don't have a back button is a big concern of mine. I also think I might miss how Android handles notifications versus the iPhone. Honestly if Google released an upgraded Nexus 5 soon I think the decision would be much easier. I think the stock Nexus experience is just as clean and elegant as iOS, but with all the advantages of Android. The Nexus 6 is just too much phablet for me.

I think dann127 has a good idea. Go back to the OS and play with it. One of two things will happen: you will remember things about iOS that you really miss and decide change is a good thing, or you might get frustrated and decide to stay.
