Android OS & android system eat battery?

What causes this? A setting I am missing somewhere? It's killing my battery.

I'm having issues with this too. I don't think that there's much you can do about it though because it's touchwiz/Android. I've heard of package disabler pro but I haven't tried it.
Also just so other people can help you should say your version and carrier and stuff

You can try turning off location history from within Google settings, turn off nearby, Google now is also a battery hog. If you haven't done so already

Sharing for a comparison point. ~18 and 9% are what I'm typically seeing for Android OS and System. I have Google Now installed and use it intermittently throughout the day. "Locating method" is set to GPS only, so suppose I could change the method to "Power saving", and get even better battery life. Battery life is already good, though, so don't see a need to change yet.

I'm inside a large building during the workday with OK cell signal (some areas barely one bar 4G LTE, others one bar 3G, while typically 2-3 bars 4G LTE) and the cell radio is working harder in areas with lower signal so that is consuming battery. Typical workweek is off charger at 0530, and back on around 2200-2230. I have screen brightness set to Auto Display. Usually end up with around 45-50% battery remaining. Some days more or less depending upon screen on time.

As for using Package Disabler Pro, recommend not using it for packages or processes related to Android OS or System as those are for core operating system capabilities and features.

Returning to Lollipop, unfortunately in a Verizon refurbished Note 5... and abandoning the completely HAYWIRE Marshmallow power drain, screen, Internet and cell standby usage off the freaking charts, in an updated corrupted Note 5...

Things have settled down smoothly under Lollipop!

Some folks have posted that Marshmallow is the second coming of the Android savior... but in my case, on a very conservatively operated Note 5...

Marshmallow, even with factory resets, partition cache cleanings, safe mode... operated like a teenager high on drugs... it was that erratic and power hungry.

My OS/Kernal discharge is ~14 and 7%. On T-Mobile, 5.1.1. It's almost always at the top of the what's eating my battery chart on GSam Battery Monitor.

Yes, I think that's OK for the OS and related system apps/process to be in the top consumer list. AndroidOS/TouchWiz does need to run in order for all of the apps and user level functions to operate.

Sorry to see you're having so many problems with reception, and now from the Marshmallow update. Lollipop was working well for me too. So far Marshmallow is good on Verizon, and I hope it stays that way.

Reception was fixed when NRB sent their Denver head system engineer to my house and we worked together on the problems with local cell tower, moved my area back to 700 from 2100 on the bandwidth. Phone was working great.

The Marshmallow did a number on my phone. The replacement running Lollipop, operating smoothly.
