If someone can help a senior set up and keep the phone updated, any phone would work.
My brother suggested to my dad an android phone. My brother had a Samsung S3. My dad got the same. We both help him with it when he needs it. He's 70. He likes it. Doesn't use it much so won't upgrade because it's still in good condition.
iPhone are easy to learn and use, but if you don't know teach it'll be hard. For example, I suggested to a coworker send a photo to her work email and print there as we have great printers. She came back to me 5 minutes later to show her how. I had no idea, but figured it out.
Same with windows phones as I had a friend whose husband had to help her and I had trouble with it, but that was years ago the new ones may be better.
