Android Pie - app crashes immediately - suggestions?

I fly an UpAir drone using their app (UPAIR from the play store) on a Pixel 2. With the August 5th update of Pie, the app will not run. It loads, I see the initial splash screen, but it vanishes before displaying any option buttons. I've notified the app developers (in China). Can anyone think of a workaround so I can get the app to run? I've tried rebooting phone, delete& reinstall app, clear cache of app & system, and fiddling with permissions. App still crashes about 1 second after launching. Anyone have ideas of a good next step for me?

There is probably nothing you can do other than wait for the developer to fix it.

One of my financial apps (from a major 401k provider) does the same thing...
