Angry Birds update: full SMS access?

Noticed there was a new Angry Birds update...also noticed a lot of angry reviews. According to the permissions list when you press the update button, it now asks for:

-Receive SMS, read SMS or MMS
-Send SMS messages

I assume this has to do with the Rio/Super Bowl tie-in, but I'm wondering if they really need that much access. Are all the people complaining just paranoid when they say they're not updating, or that they're uninstalling?

They said it's a mistake and that their going to fix it monday.

It was actually for their upcoming in game purchasing system. They have since removed the SMS requirement.
